DACA CHARITY FOR NEEDY PEOPLES

DACA’S RESPONSE TO COVID 19

DR. AMBEDKAR CULTURAL ACADEMY (DACA) has been rallying for the holistic development of the marginalized communities particularly of Dalits and Tribals in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu through its educational, health care and empowerment programs. Today in the present scenario of COVID-19 Pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, people all over the world are facing hardships. COVID-19 has not just evoked fear but has also caused depression, anxiety and hunger affecting the social fabric of the Community.

 

DACA promptly responded to the situation by constituting COVID-19 RELIEF TEAM which comprised of Jesuits and lay Animators. The team decided to reach out nearly 1000 deserving families with food materials. The Coordinators and Animators of DACA’s Evening Study Centers and Self Help Groups did a careful field-study and identified 1000 deserving families in six districts - Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar.

DACA’S FIVE LAYER FARM

 

1. GOAL OF THE PROJECT:

To empower the local farmers to face drought prone situation through sustainable organic farming and become self-sufficient in food production for their household and communities.

 

2. OBJECTIVES

1. To make the local farmers aware of the climatic changes and its root causes.

2. To make the farmers understand the harm done to the soil by chemical fertilizers and conventional

      cultivations.

3. To improve the farmers’ understanding about the need and importance of FLFM.

4. To empower the local farmers with the various techniques involved in FLFM.  

5. To identify those farmers with leadership qualities and to prepare them to become trainers.

 

3. STRATERGIES

1. Collaborating with pro-green activists and agriculturists to protect our Mother Earth  and particularly

    agriculture in Tamil Nadu.

2.Converting one acre of land in DACA’s Kuthiraikuthi farm into optimally utilized model organic farm by

    adopting FLFM.

3. Developing a field based training center in the farm itself to offer periodical trainings to the small 

     farmers and to those who are interested in farming. 

4. Establishing a union among the local farmers to practice and promote FLFM farming.

5. Creating a seed bank with the objective of preserving traditional plants and making seeds available

     for the local farmers at low price.

6.  Creating water harvesting structures in the farm to improve the ground water level.

     Making a provision in the farm to collect country cow-dung and urine to prepare various organic     

    manure.

7.  Inspiring DACA staff and children to live a simple life in alliance with nature.
